An Extra-Ordinary Time

01-22-2023Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B.Wilson, VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Saturday, February 4, our parishioner Alejandro
(Alex) Leguizamon will be ordained a deacon at our Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston. For about five and a half years, Alex has been preparing, and now the time has come! Please pray for Alex and his family as he makes his final spiritual preparations for this important gift of the Holy Order of Deacon.

Our 120-Day Million-Dollar Challenge for the new St. Mary’s School Science and Engineering Academy continues along, and it has been wonderfully successful so far! As of January 13, $546,760 has been pledged. This in turn will be matched dollar-for-dollar, which becomes $1,093,520 and brings our grand total up to $6,245,760 with 265 participants. We are shooting for $6.9 million in pledges, so we can use your generous pledge to put us across the finish line. The end is within reach! Join your fellow parishioners in making history by ensuring the excellent future education of our children for the world tomorrow. You can make your pledge online at stmarys-aiken.org/academy , or fill out a pledge card found at the doors of the church, or call the parish office at 803.649.4777.

In the Church’s sacred liturgy, the anniversary of the dedication of the actual church building of a parish community is an annual solemnity of the highest order. It allows a local parish community to celebrate and renew its resolve to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the whole world, for us beginning in the local community. This year as usual we will move the Anniversary of the Dedication of St. Mary Help of Christians to the closest Sunday, which is the weekend of January 28 and 29. All the Masses next weekend will be our anniversary with its own set of readings and prayers and will replace the Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Finally, in include some recent words below from Pope Francis on January 9th through a Catholic News Service article on the magnificent and irreplaceable gift of human life.

- Father Wilson

“Peace requires before all else the defense of life, which is threatened by the alleged ‘right to abortion.’ No one can claim rights over the life of another human being, especially one who is powerless and thus completely defenseless.”

Political leaders must “safeguard the rights of those are weakest and to combat the throwaway culture that also, tragically, affects the sick, the disabled and the elderly.” Also, governments have a “primary responsibility to ensure that citizens are assisted in every phase of human life until natural death.” The death penalty, the pope said, is “always inadmissible, since it attacks the inviolability and the dignity of the person. …We cannot over-look the fact that, up until his or her very last moment, a person can repent and change.
