Go Minimum or Go Max?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

As Dr. lan Murphy elaborated so well at his parish mission last week, it starts with God's love. God created us out of love, redeemed us, and never stops pursuing us for an ever-closer relationship. Though we stray from Him, he never stops calling us back to Him.

I have been a priest now for ten and a half years. I have never yet had anyone approach me and inform me that they just intended to do the very minimum to get themselves into heaven. Their goals are always much more lofty ... at least at the beginning. I do find however increasingly, that many are not even doing the bare minimum to stay in good standing with our Lord and His Church. The Catholic Church has laid out the absolute minimum, the basic "blocking and tackling" that we must do to be in good standing.

From our Catechism:

2041 The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life. The obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor:

2042 The first precept ("You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor") requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord as well as the principle liturgical feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints ... "

The second precept ("You shall confess your sins at least once a year.") ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness.

The third precept ("You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season") guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood ... "

2043 The fourth precept ("You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church") ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.

The fifth precept ("You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church") means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.

In this Lenten season, may all of us examine our lives and see where we are with "the very necessary minimum" of prayer and moral effort. Better yet, during this Lent, may we "Go Max" with our relationship with the Lord and His Church.

¿al Mínimo O Al Máximo?

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

"Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna." (Juan 3,16)

Como bien explico el Dr. lan Murphy en su misión parroquial la semana pasada, todo comienza con el amor de Dios. Dios nos creo por amor, nos redimio y nunca deja de buscarnos para una relación cada vez más estrecha. Aunque nos alejamos de Él, nunca deja de llamarnos de vuelta a Él.

Llevo diez anos y medio como sacerdote. Nunca me ha pasado que alguien se me acerque para decirme que solo pretendía hacer lo mínimo para entrar al cielo. Sus metas siempre son mucho más elevadas ... al menos al principio. Sin embargo, cada vez veo más que muchos ni siquiera hacen lo mínimo indispensable para mantenerse en buena relacion con nuestro Senor y su Iglesia. La Iglesia Católica ha establecido el mínimo absoluto, las medidas básicas de seguridad que debemos tomar para mantenernos en regla.

De nuestro Catecismo:

2041 Los preceptos de la Iglesia se enmarcan en el contexto de una vida moral ligada a la vida litúrgica y alimentada por ella. El carácter obligatorio de estas leyes positivas, decretadas por las autoridades pastorales, tiene por objeto garantizar a los fieles el mínimo indispensable en el espíritu de oración y esfuerzo moral, en el crecimiento del amor a Dios y al prójimo:

2042 El primer precepto ("Asistirás a Misa los domingos y días de precepto y descansarás del trabajo servil") exige que los fieles santifiquen el día que conmemora la Resurreccion del Senor, así como las principales fiestas litúrgicas que honran los misterios del Señor, de la Santísima Virgen María y de los santos ...

"El segundo precepto ("Confesarás tus pecados al menos una vez al año") asegura la preparación para la Eucaristía mediante la recepción del sacramento de la reconciliación, que continua la obra de conversión y perdón del Bautismo. El tercer precepto ("Recibirás el sacramento de la Eucaristía al menos durante el tiempo de Pascua") garantiza como mínimo la recepcion del Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor ... "

2043 El cuarto precepto ("Observarás los días de ayuno y abstinencia establecidos por la Iglesia") Garantiza los tiempos de ascesis y penitencia que nos preparan para las fiestas litúrgicas y nos ayudan a dominar nuestros instintos y a adquirir libertad de corazón.

El quinto precepto («Ayudarás a proveer a las necesidades de la Iglesia») implica que los fieles están obligados a ayudar con las necesidades materiales de la Iglesia, cada uno según sus posibilidades.

En esta Cuaresma, que todos examinemos nuestras vidas y veamos donde nos encontramos con «el mínimo indispensable» de oración y esfuerzo moral. Mejor aún, durante esta Cuaresma, que «maximicemos» nuestra relación con el Señor y su Iglesia.
