Come Holy Spirit!

Dear Friends in Christ,

Today, on Pentecost, the promise that Christ made to the Apostles is fulfilled. On the evening of Easter Sunday, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit." (Jn 20:22) The coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost solemnly renews and brings to completion this gift with outward manifestations, with tongues of fire no less. Thus, the Paschal mystery is culminated.

The Spirit that Jesus conveys creates a new human condition in the disciple and fosters unity. When arrogance led people to challenge God by building the Tower of Babel, God confused their languages, and they could not understand each other. At Pentecost, the opposite occurs: by the grace of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles were understood by people of the most diverse origins and languages.

The Holy Spirit is the inner teacher who guides the disciples towards truth, who motivates them to do good, who comforts them in pain and transforms them internally, giving them new strength, capacity and incredible boldness.

On the first Pentecost of the Christian era, the Apostles were gathered together with the Virgin Mary, and they were in prayer. Solitude and a prayerful attitude are essential to receive the Spirit. "And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them." (Acts 2:2-3)

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to preach boldly. Those men, once fearful, had been transformed into courageous preachers who did not fear imprisonment, torture, or martyrdom. It's not surprising; the power of the Holy Spirit was in them.

The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, is the soul of my soul, the life of my life, the being of my being; He is my sanctifier, the guest of my innermost self. To mature in the life of faith, it is essential that our relationship with Him becomes increasingly conscious and personal. On this Pentecost celebration, may we thank God for His precious gift of the Holy Spirit!

¡Ven, Espíritu Santo!

Queridos amigos en Cristo: Hoy, en Pentecostés, se cumple la promesa que Cristo hizo a los Apóstoles. En la tarde del Domingo de Pascua, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: «Reciban al Espíritu Santo» (Jn 20,22). La venida del Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés renueva y culmina solemnemente este don con manifestaciones externas, nada menos que con lenguas de fuego. Así culmina el misterio pascual.

El Espíritu que Jesús transmite crea una nueva condición humana en el discípulo y fomenta la unidad. Cuando la arrogancia llevó a la gente a desafiar a Dios construyendo la Torre de Babel, Dios confundió sus lenguas y no pudieron entenderse. En Pentecostés, ocurre lo contrario: por la gracia del Espíritu Santo, los Apóstoles fueron comprendidos por personas de los más diversos orígenes e idiomas.

El Espíritu Santo es el maestro interior que guía a los discípulos hacia la verdad, los motiva a hacer el bien, los consuela en el dolor y los transforma interiormente, dándoles nueva fuerza, capacidad y una increíble valentía.

En el primer Pentecostés de la era cristiana, los apóstoles estaban reunidos con la Virgen María y oraban. La soledad y una actitud de oración son esenciales para recibir el Espíritu. «De pronto, vino del cielo un ruido, semejante a una fuerte ráfaga de viento, que resonó en toda la casa donde se encontraban. Entonces vieron aparecer unas lenguas como de fuego, que descendieron por separado sobre cada uno de ellos» (Hechos 2,2-3). Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a predicar con valentía. Aquellos hombres, antes temerosos, se habían transformado en predicadores valientes que no temían la prisión, la tortura ni el martirio. No es de extrañar: el poder del Espíritu Santo estaba en ellos.

El Espíritu Santo, la Tercera Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, es el alma de mi alma, la vida de mi vida, el ser de mi ser; Él es mi santificador, el huésped de mi ser más íntimo. Para madurar en la vida de fe, es esencial que nuestra relación con Él se vuelva cada vez más consciente y personal. En esta celebración de Pentecostés, ¡agradezcamos a Dios por su precioso don del Espíritu Santo!
