Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate those two apostles whom Christ chose as “pillars” to continue his work in the Church. Peter received the mission to found and govern it; Paul, the mission to spread it throughout the world. Remembering them in a single day, we become aware of the Church's dual dimension: to be one and to be catholic. And....this feast is especially important to us because our parish was founded on the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul. This date completes 172 years for our parish!

Peter was the first to profess faith in Christ. When Jesus asked his disciples what people thought of him, Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, replied: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The other disciples had not yet grasped the essence of their Master's person, or they did not yet have the courage to confess it publicly, but Peter did. And Jesus publicly recognized him: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom.”

Peter was the first Pope, and his task was to make Christ known to us and maintain the unity of the Church. This is the task of all Popes until the end of the world. It is up to us to listen to his teachings, support him in his actions, defend him against criticism, and always pray for him.

Paul, through his preaching, helped us to know Christ. He did not know Christ during his lifetime but after his resurrection. At first, he was a persecutor of Christians, but after his conversion on the road to Damascus, he took his message to all pagan peoples and converted them to the Catholic faith. He taught the early Christians: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31). He was convinced that “nothing and no one will be able to separate us from the love of Christ” (Rom 8:39).

The two apostles gave their lives for Christ. They both arrived by different paths in Rome, the capitol of the empire. Peter was crucified upside down, Paul's was beheaded. But their voice was not silenced. The new Christians suffered many persecutions, hid in the catacombs, and were devoured by beasts in the Coliseum and the Roman circus, but their blood worked the miracle of making Rome the capitol of Christianity in just a few years. That is why Tertullian said that “the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church.”

Through the intercession of Saints Peter and Paul, may we have the grace of final perseverance and the courage to boldly live for Christ!

Santos Pedro y Pablo

Estimados feligreses:

Hoy celebramos a los dos apóstoles que Cristo eligió como pilares para continuar su obra en la Iglesia. Pedro recibió la misión de fundarla y gobernarla; Pablo, la de extenderla por el mundo. Al recordarlos en un solo día, tomamos conciencia de la doble dimensión de la Iglesia: ser una y ser católica. Y... esta fiesta es especialmente importante para nosotros porque nuestra parroquia se fundó el día de los santos Pedro y Pablo. ¡Esta fecha marca el 172 aniversario de nuestra parroquia!

Pedro fue el primero en profesar la fe en Cristo. Cuando Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos qué pensaban de él, Pedro, inspirado por el Espíritu Santo, respondió: «Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo». Los demás discípulos aún no habían comprendido la esencia de la persona de su Maestro, o aún no tenían el valor de confesarlo públicamente, pero Pedro sí. Y Jesús lo reconoció públicamente: «Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta roca edificaré mi Iglesia. Te daré las llaves del reino».

Pedro fue el primer Papa, y su tarea fue darnos a conocer a Cristo y mantener la unidad de la Iglesia. Esta es la tarea de todos los Papas hasta el fin del mundo. Nos corresponde escuchar sus enseñanzas, apoyarlo en sus acciones, defenderlo de las críticas y orar siempre por él.

Pablo, a través de su predicación, nos ayudó a conocer a Cristo. No lo conoció durante su vida, sino después de su resurrección. Al principio, fue un perseguidor de cristianos, pero tras su conversión en el camino a Damasco, llevó su mensaje a todos los pueblos paganos y los convirtió a la fe católica. Enseñó a los primeros cristianos: «Si Dios está con nosotros, ¿quién contra nosotros?» (Rom 8,31). Estaba convencido de que «nada ni nadie podrá separarnos del amor de Cristo» (Rom 8,39).

Los dos apóstoles dieron su vida por Cristo. Ambos llegaron por caminos diferentes a Roma, la capital del imperio. Pedro fue crucificado boca abajo, Pablo fue decapitado. Pero su voz no fue silenciada. Los nuevos cristianos sufrieron muchas persecuciones, se escondieron en las catacumbas y fueron devorados por las fieras en el Coliseo y el circo romano, pero su sangre obró el milagro de convertir a Roma en la capital del cristianismo en tan solo unos años. Por eso Tertuliano dijo que «la sangre de los mártires es la semilla de la Iglesia».

Por la intercesión de los santos Pedro y Pablo, que tengamos la gracia de la perseverancia f inal y la valentía de vivir con valentía para Cristo.
