Pray for the Conclave!

Dear Friends in Christ,

We had finished the Holy Triduum of our Lord’s passion, death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit blessed us with beautiful and reverent liturgies. On the Easter Vigil, I was blessed to offer the Sacrament of Confirmation to 24 people.

Then Easter Monday as I was getting ready to leave for the airport at around 4:00pm, a friend texted me and informed me that Pope Francis had died. It was quite a shock and quite a way to start on my journey to Wisconsin to see my brother Warren and his wife Marilyn.

My trip through the airport was dramatically different this time. When I travel, I normally wear my cassock; it is a clear witness to the Catholic faith and there are always blessed encounters. This time, several people came up to me and offered condolences and told me how they had been blessed by Pope Francis in one way or another. They told me where they worshiped and shared a little about their faith. One soldier simply hugged me with barely a word. Another lady asked me if I was headed for Rome. I had many blessed encounters for sure.

On Saturday, at 4:00am EDT, a funeral Mass was celebrated in Rome for Pope Francis. I got up early to watch it and it was an awesome liturgy. And for the past nine days, the Church has been praying a novena for the repose of his soul. This novena or novendiales, consisted of a short reading from Scripture or some other ecclesiastical text and some brief prayers, including orations drawn from the Roman Missal and the Order of Christian Funerals. During this novena nine Cardinals have offered Mass for Pope Francis.

So, we are now in a period of time that the Church calls interregnum, which is Latin for “between the reigns.” The conclave to choose a new pope will begin on May 7th. Only Cardinals under the age of 80 can vote and the number of cardinal electors is 134. They will meet in the Sistine Chapel to elect the new pope. A two-thirds majority is required to elect a pope.

Yes, we are living through some very interesting and special times! May all of us, fast and pray for the College of Cardinals that they will select a good, holy and orthodox man; a pope who will confirm the faith of the brethren and guard the deposit of faith that we have received.

“Beloved, being very eager to write to you of our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude 3)

Queridos amigos en Cristo: Habíamos concluido el Santo Triduo de la pasión, muerte y resurrección de nuestro Señor. El Espíritu Santo nos bendijo con hermosas y reverentes liturgias. En la Vigilia Pascual, tuve la bendición de ofrecer el Sacramento de la Confirmación a 24 personas.

El Lunes de Pascua, mientras me preparaba para salir hacia el aeropuerto alrededor de las 4:00 p. m., un amigo me envió un mensaje de texto informándome del fallecimiento del Papa Francisco. Fue una gran sorpresa y una excelente manera de comenzar mi viaje a Wisconsin para ver a mi hermano Warren y a su esposa Marilyn.

Mi paso por el aeropuerto fue radicalmente diferente esta vez. Cuando viajo, normalmente uso mi sotana; es un claro testimonio de la fe católica y siempre hay encuentros bendecidos. En esta ocasión, varias personas se acercaron a mí, me dieron el pésame y me contaron cómo habían sido bendecidas por el Papa Francisco de una u otra manera. Me dijeron dónde celebraban sus cultos y compartieron un poco sobre su fe. Un soldado me abrazó sin decir ni una palabra. Otra señora me preguntó si iba a Roma. Sin duda, tuve muchos encuentros benditos.

El sábado, a las 4:00 a. m. EDT, se celebró en Roma una misa funeral por el papa Francisco. Madrugué para verla y fue una liturgia impresionante. Durante los últimos nueve días, la Iglesia ha estado rezando una novena por el descanso eterno de su alma. Esta novena, o novendiales, consistió en una breve lectura de la Escritura o de algún otro texto eclesiástico y algunas oraciones breves, incluyendo oraciones extraídas del Misal Romano y del Ritual de Exequias Cristianas. Durante esta novena, nueve cardenales ofrecieron una misa por el papa Francisco.

Así pues, nos encontramos en un período que la Iglesia llama interregno, que en latín significa "entre reinados". El cónclave para elegir al nuevo papa comenzará el 7 de mayo. Solo los cardenales menores de 80 años pueden votar, y el número de cardenales electores es de 134. Se reunirán en la Capilla Sixtina para elegir al nuevo papa. Se requiere una mayoría de dos tercios para elegirlo.

¡Sí, vivimos tiempos muy interesantes y especiales! Ayunemos y oremos todos por el Colegio Cardenalicio para que elijan a un hombre bueno, santo y ortodoxo; un papa que confirme la fe de los hermanos y custodie el depósito de la fe que hemos recibido.

“Amados, teniendo un gran deseo de escribirles acerca de nuestra común salvación, me ha sido necesario escribirles exhortándolos a contender ardientemente por la fe que fue una vez entregada a los santos.” (Judas 3)
