Our Lord is Presented

Dear Friends in Christ,

    Today, we see how Simeon, ignoring the winter's cold, is awaiting the arrival of the Messiah. Five hundred years before, when the Temple was starting to be built, there was such poverty in the country that its builders were highly discouraged. It was then when Haggai, the prophet, said: “Greater will be the glory of this house the latter more than the former —says the LORD of hosts; And in this place I will give you peace— oracle of the LORD of hosts.” (Hag 2:9); and added “I will shake all the nations, so that the treasures of all the nations will come in. And I will fill this house with glory” (Hag 2:7). In the place of “treasures of all nations,” St. Jerome translated: “the desired of all nations.”

    The Holy Spirit had assured Simeon “that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord” (Lk 2:26), and today, led by the Holy Spirit, he has gone into the Temple. Simeon is not a Levite, nor a scribe, nor a doctor of the law, he is just a “righteous and devout man, awaiting the consolation of Israel” (Lk 2:25). But the Holy Spirit blows where He wills (cf. Jn 3:8).

    Now, he realizes with surprise that no preparation has been made, no flags, garlands, damasks, or shields can be seen anywhere, just Joseph and Mary, crossing the plaza, and bringing the Child Jesus in their arms. And the psalmist exclaims: “Lift up your heads, O gates; be lifted, you ancient portals, that the king of glory may enter.” (Ps 24:)

    Stretching out his arms, Simeon takes the infant from his Mother and blessed God while saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Lk 2:29-32). Then, he tells Mary: “A sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (Lk 2:35). Don’t you wish that you could have been there for our Lord’s presentation?

    Mary our Mother, when the moment to go to the Father's house arrives, please carry me as you did with Jesus, for I am your son and a child of the Father too.

¡Nuestro Señor es Presantado!

Queridos amigos en Cristo,

    Hoy vemos cómo Simeón, ignorando el frío del invierno, espera la llegada del Mesías. Quinientos años antes, cuando se empezaba a construir el Templo, había tanta pobreza en el país que sus constructores estaban muy desanimados. Fue entonces cuando el profeta Ageo dijo: “la gloria última de esta Casa será más grande que la primera, dice el Señor de los ejército, y en este lugar yo daré la paz –oráculo del Señor de los ejércitos–.” (Ag 2,9); y añadió: “haré estremecer a todas las naciones: entonces afluirán los tesoros de todas las naciones y llenaré de gloria esta Casa dice el Señor de los ejércitos.” (Ag 2,7). En lugar de “tesoros de todas las naciones”, San Jerónimo tradujo: “el deseado de todas las naciones”.

    El Espíritu Santo había asegurado a Simeón «y le había revelado que no moriría antes de ver al Mesías del Señor.» (Lc 2,26), y hoy, guiado por el Espíritu Santo, ha entrado en el Templo. Simeón no es un levita, ni un escriba, ni un doctor de la ley, es sólo un hombre «justo y piadoso, y esperaba el consuelo de Israel.» (Lc 2,25). Pero el Espíritu Santo sopla donde quiere (cf. Jn 3,8).

    Ahora, se da cuenta con sorpresa de que no ha habido preparativos, no se ven por ningún lado banderas, guirnaldas, damascos ni escudos, sólo José y María, cruzando la plaza, llevando en brazos al Niño Jesús. Y el salmista exclama: « ¡Puertas, levanten sus dinteles, levántense, puertas eternas, para que entre el Rey de la gloria!». (Sal 24,7)

    Simeón, extendiendo los brazos, toma al niño de los brazos de su Madre y bendice a Dios diciendo: “«Ahora, Señor, puedes dejar que tu servidor muera en paz, como lo has prometido, porque mis ojos han visto la salvación que preparaste delante de todos los pueblos: luz para iluminar a las naciones paganas y gloria de tu pueblo Israel” (Lc 2,29-32). Luego, le dice a María: “y a ti misma una espada te atravesará el corazón. Así se manifestarán claramente los pensamientos íntimos de muchos” (Lc 2,35). ¿No te hubiera gustado estar presente en la presentación de nuestro Señor?

    María, Madre nuestra, cuando llegue el momento de ir a la casa del Padre, por favor llévame como lo hiciste con Jesús, porque soy tu hijo y un hijo del Padre también.
