Built of Living Stones

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“The anniversary of a church’s dedication is celebrated with the rank of a solemnity.” – Roman Pontifical, Rite of Dedication of a Church, 27.

This Sunday we recall the day our church building was consecrated and dedicated to the worship of God. At that moment, this space was transformed from being a mere building into a church – a true, holy place of worship. If you were present on that chilly night of February 2, 2015, you might recall the first action of the Bishop was to sprinkle the people, the walls, and the altar with blessed water. This symbolized the moment of your own baptism, that exact moment when you were transformed from being a “regular person” into a true temple of God, a temple of the Holy Spirit. (See 1 Corinthians 3:16-17.)

Of course, you are the true beauty of any church building. You, the baptized members of the Mystical Body of Christ, of which our consecrated building is a beautiful symbol and has an important function. It is here in this building that you and I are formed to be the living Church as Christ’s Body and where we receive His saving Sacraments. Jesus is the Head and we, the baptized, are the Body (see 1 Cor. 12:12-26). “Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5). This Thursday, February 2, we will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple (a.k.a., Candlemas). The 5:30pm Mass will begin with a special lighting and blessing of candles. If you would like to bring candles from home to be blessed, you are encouraged to do so. (Mark them and place them on the designated cart.) The following day, Friday, Feb. 3, is the feast of St. Blaise the Martyr. We will have the traditional Blessing of Throats at the close of the 5:30pm Mass this day.

You may recall way back in 2018, I invited parishioners to join me for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, which took place in February of 2020. Space was limited to 38 people. So many people asked to be put on a waiting list that I promised to take these “waiting list pilgrims” on a future pilgrimage. The dates for that pilgrimage were postponed twice due to covid restrictions; but finally, we are going: Feb 13-23. Please know that you and your intentions will be in my prayers. I know many others would like to go, so I hope to look to offer a future pilgrimage. May God bless you and your families for your sacrifice and generosity. And may we, the Church of living stones, continue to grow and fulfill our common mission.

Yours in Our Lord and Our Lady,
Father Wilson

El espacio estaba limita-do a 38 personas.
