Totally Yours

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend, Pete O’Steen, our summer seminarian, finishes his time with us. It’s been a real pleasure to have Pete here at St. Mary’s. Please continue to pray for Pete as he enters his second year of major theology. Please also pray for all our seminarians and for more holy vocations to the priesthood.

Some insight into preparation for priesthood: Major seminary is graduate-level work. It is almost always four years because it doesn’t involve merely education, but intensive formation based on four pillars: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. Since it is graduate level education, though, a seminarian must have completed college. If a candidate thinks he may have a vocation very early and applies young, he might be sent to a special “college seminary,” which is connected to an accredited university. Here, the young men would live in a community to give each other support and receive an undergraduate degree, usually in philosophy. Sometimes, men receive their undergraduate degree and later feel the call to priesthood. Then, some prerequisites are needed in what is usually known as “pre-theology.” For an example, I spent five years undergraduate (biology), two years of pre-theology, and then the four years of major theology. At least you know your priests are well-educated for what what they do!

Next week, July 26-30, we welcome our Totus Tuus missionaries, who will lead a wonderful, faith-filled summer camp for our children and teens. Many thanks to all of our incredible volunteers from the parish, who are making this possible by their sacrifice.

The missionaries of Totus Tuus are four college students (two male and two female), who devote their entire summer to God, traveling from parish to parish in order to bring this marvelous camp to children everywhere in our region. The name “Totus Tuus” means “Totally Yours,” and comes from the Latin motto of Pope St. John Paul II. In this motto, we get an insight into the spirituality that drove the pope in his ministry. It comes from a prayer of St. Louis de Montfort (1673-1716), a French priest who authored the spiritual classic True Devotion to Mary. Within it is a prayer where St. Louis writes of Mary: “I am totally yours (totus tuus), and all that I have is yours.” St. Louis both expresses his love for Mary and also his desire to belong completely to God like her and with her. St. Louis believed that this Marian spirituality of “totally yours” is “the most perfect of all devotions” because “it conforms, unites, and consecrates us most perfectly to Jesus Christ.” We ask Mary as Help of Christians to help each of us put on Christ and follow God’s plan as perfectly and as willingly as she did.

Also, there will be an extra daily Mass the week of the camp (July 26-30) at 11:30am. The parish is invited to attend with the children.

Yours truly in Christ,
Father Wilson

Padre Wilson
