The Greatness of John the Baptist

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today, as in last Sunday, the Church familiarizes us with the figure of John the Baptist. He had many disciples and a clear and well-differentiated approach to the people in his life: for the Publicans, for the soldiers, for the Pharisees and Sadducees... His desire was to prepare the way for the Messiah's public life. First, He sent John and Andrew; today He sends others so they could know Him too. They ask Him: "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" (Mt 11:3). John certainly knew who Jesus was. He himself bears witness to that: "I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' (Jn 1:33). And Jesus responds with facts: the blind see, the lame walk...

John had a firm disposition about his way of life and about sticking to the Truth, which, eventually, brought imprisonment and martyrdom to him. Even in his prison he expeditiously speaks to Herod. John teaches us how to combine a firm character with meekness: "The one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie" (Jn 1:27); "He must increase; I must decrease." (Jn 3:30) He exults in the fact that Jesus baptizes more disciples than him, as he only considers himself as "The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man." (Jn 3:29)

In short: John teaches us to seriously consider our mission on earth: to be tenacious Christians knowing how to behave as sons of God. We should be asking ourselves: -How did Mary and Joseph prepare themselves for Jesus Christ's birth? How did John prepare Jesus' teachings? How do we prepare ourselves to commemorate Christ's coming, Advent, as well as the second Advent at the end of time? As Cyril of Jerusalem said: "We preach not one advent only of Christ, but a second also, far more glorious than the former. For the former gave a view of His patience; but the latter brings with it the crown of a Divine Kingdom."

La grandeza de Juan el Bautista

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Hoy, como el domingo pasado, la Iglesia familiariza con la figura de Juan el Bautista. El t muchos discípulos y un enfoque claro y b diferenciado hacia las personas de su tiempo: p los publicanos, para los soldados, para los farise saduceos ... Su deseo era preparar el camino par vida publica del Mesías. Primero envió a Jua Andres; hoy envía a otros para que tambien pudie conocerlo. Ellos le preguntan: "¿Eres tu el que ha venir, o debemos esperar a otro?" (Mt 11,3). J ciertamente sabía quién era Jesús. Él mismo testimonio de ello: "Yo no lo conocía, pero el que envio a bautizar con agua me dijo: 'Aquel so quien veas descender y permanecer el Espíritu, es el que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo.'" (Jn 1,33 Jesus responde con hechos: los ciegos ven, los c andan...

Juan tuvo una firme disposicion respecto a su m de vida y a mantenerse fiel a la Verdad, lo c finalmente, lo llevo al encarcelamiento y al marti Incluso en su prision habla con prontitud a Hero Juan nos ensena como combinar un caracter fir con mansedumbre: "El que viene detrás de m quien no soy digno de desatarle la correa de sandalia" (Jn 1,27); "Es necesario que El crezca y yo disminuya." (Jn 3,30). El se regocija en el he de que Jesús bautiza a más discípulos que él, p sólo se considera a sí mismo como "El que tiene esposa es el esposo; el amigo del esposo." (Jn 3,29).

En resumen: Juan nos ensena a considerar seriamente nuestra mision en la tierra: ser cristianos tenaces, sabiendo cómo comportarnos como hijos de Dios. Deberíamos preguntarnos: -¿ Cómo se prepararon María y José para el nacimiento de Jesucristo? ¿Cómo preparó Juan las enseñanzas de Jesús? ¿Cómo nos preparamos nosotros para conmemorar la venida de Cristo, el Adviento, así como el segundo Adviento al final de los tiempos? Como dijo Cirilo de Jerusalén: "No predicamos sólo un adviento de Cristo, sino también un segundo, mucho más glorioso que el primero. Pues el primero mostró su paciencia; pero el segundo trae consigo la corona de un Reino Divino."
