Fishers of Men

Dear Friends in Christ,

Today the Gospel offers us the simple yet profound dialogue between Jesus and Simon Peter, a dialogue that we could make our own: in the midst of the stormy waters of this world, we strive to swim against the current, hoping that our Gospel proclamation will obtain a fruitful response.

And it is then that the harsh reality inevitably falls upon us: our strength is not enough. We need something more: trust in the Word of the One who has promised us that he will never leave us alone. “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” (Lk 5:5). We can understand this response of Peter in relation to the words of Mary at the wedding at Cana: “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5). And it is only in the confident trust of the Lord's will that our work is profitable.

Only he, who, like Peter, has been able to accept his limitations, is in a position to accept that the fruits of his apostolic work are not his own, but those of the One whom he has served as an instrument. St. Josemaría Escrivá wrote: “[Our task as children of God is] to get all men to enter, freely, into the divine net; to get them to love each other (...). Let us accompany Our Lord as he goes about his divine task of fishing.”

When we really realize how much our Lord has done for us, and will do for us in the future, we might fall to our knees and say, “Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.” But our Lord tells us to “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

May we live with the confidence and certainty that our Lord has gone before us in our efforts to evangelize.

Pescadores de Hombres

Queridos amigos en Cristo:

Hoy el Evangelio nos propone el diálogo sencillo pero profundo entre Jesús y Simón Pedro, un diálogo que podemos hacer nuestro: en medio de las aguas tempestuosas de este mundo, nos esforzamos por nadar contra la corriente, esperando que nuestro anuncio evangélico obtenga una respuesta fecunda.

Y es entonces cuando inevitablemente cae sobre nosotros la dura realidad: nuestras fuerzas no nos bastan. Necesitamos algo más: confiar en la Palabra de Aquel que nos ha prometido que nunca nos dejará solos. «Maestro, hemos estado trabajando toda la noche y no hemos pescado nada; pero, cuando tú lo digas, echaré las redes» (Lc 5,5). Podemos entender esta respuesta de Pedro en relación con las palabras de María en las bodas de Caná: «Hagan todo lo que él les diga» (Jn 2,5). Y sólo en la firme confianza en la voluntad del Señor nuestro trabajo es fructífero.

Sólo aquel que, como Pedro, ha sabido aceptar sus limitaciones, está en condiciones de aceptar que los frutos de su labor apostólica no son suyos, sino de Aquel a quien ha servido de instrumento. San Josemaría Escrivá escribió: “[Nuestra tarea como hijos de Dios es] conseguir que todos los hombres entren, libremente, en la red divina; conseguir que se amen unos a otros (...). Acompañemos a Nuestro Señor en su divina tarea de pescar.”

Cuando realmente nos demos cuenta de lo mucho que Nuestro Señor ha hecho por nosotros, y hará por nosotros en el futuro, tal vez caigamos de rodillas y digamos: “Apártate de mí, Señor, que soy un hombre pecador”. Pero Nuestro Señor nos dice: “No temas; de ahora en adelante serás pescador de hombres.”

Vivamos con la confianza y la certeza de que Nuestro Señor nos ha precedido en nuestros esfuerzos por evangelizar.
