Doomscrolling

Dear Friends in Christ,

        Wikipedia defines doomscrolling as “the act of spending an excessive amount of time reading large quantities of news, particularly negative news, on the web and social media.” Have you ever been involved in doomscrolling? Be honest....most of us have done it and we most assuredly know that we can do better with our time; we can in fact be good stewards of the time that we spend on our smart phone. Yes, we must know the truth and we must know what is going on in the Church and the world so that we can more effectively pray and work for the Kingdom of God. But can we have better sources of news?

        So...in an attempt to share some better alternatives to doomscrolling, I would like to offer you three alternatives. First, sign up to receive emails from The Loop by Catholic Vote. Catholic Vote is inspired and organized by faithful Catholic laity. Their mission is “to inspire every Catholic in America to live out the truths of our faith in public life.” Their emails are free, and you will get one Monday through Friday. A recent email included updates on Pope Francis’ fall, coerced abortions in Minnesota and Zuckerberg and the big shift in culture. To sign up for The Loop, please go to https://catholicvote.org and enter your email. It’s a great one-page summary of key events in the life of the Church and the world.

        A second idea is Stella Maris Media. This website is run by Christine Niles and can be found at https://stellamaris.media. Christine Niles is a Catholic mom, investigative reporter and writer who does regular posts on her website. Her work is exhaustively researched and faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church. I particularly like her Catholic News Roundup which is posted about once a week. A recent episode had updates on Pete Hegseth being grilled in the Senate, President Elect Trump naming Hollywood ambassadors and a tabernacle and hosts that survived the LA fires. Check it out. It’s a great way to get a quick ten-minute update on news of critical import to faithful Catholics.

         Over two years ago, Twitter became “X” when Elon Musk purchased it. I have had a Twitter account (now X) for about ten years, but I don’t post to it. I do however think it’s a great way to get a quick summary of key issues in the Church and the world. So, though I don’t post, here are some of the posts that I follow: LifeSiteNews; Michael J. Matt; Dr. Maike Hickson; Lepanto Institute; Victor Davis Hanson; Father Peter West, Sensus Fidelium and several others. It’s a wonderful way to get a briefing on key Catholic issues in just a few minutes. The app is free, or you can subscribe for $4, $11 or $30 per month with fewer ads and more features.

            Wikipedia define el doomscrolling (desplazamiento caótico) como “el acto de pasar una cantidad excesiva de tiempo leyendo grandes cantidades de noticias, particularmente noticias negativas, en la web y las redes sociales”.

            ¿Alguna vez has estado involucrado en el doomscrolling? Sé honesto... la mayoría de nosotros lo hemos hecho y seguramente sabemos que podemos hacer mejor uso de nuestro tiempo; de hecho, podemos ser buenos administradores del tiempo que pasamos en nuestro celular.
