Very Pleased to Be Here!

03-19-2023Pastor's LetterRev. Richard C. Wilson, VF

Dear Friends in Christ,

This is my first letter to the parish, and I hope that it will be the first of many. As I have shared with many of you, my assignment to St. Mary’s came as a total surprise to me. I had told several people and some priests that I planned to stay at Our Lady of Peace for as long as I could still walk down the aisle…whether that be in six months or ten years. But it was not to be. On January 24th, I received a call from Msgr. Cellini advising me that the Bishop wanted me to move to be Pastor of St. Mary Help of Christians. It was certainly a shock to me. But, as I reflected on it, I realized that January 24th is the feast day of my patron saint, St. Francis de Sales. It was no coincidence that I received that call on his feast day. St. Francis de Sales was almost constantly on the go; he exercised a truly mobile ministry. May the Holy Spirit help me to be as faithful and committed to the people of God as he was.

I mentioned on Sunday that though I am humbled and honored to be assigned as your Pastor, I do mourn the loss of Our Lady of Peace. OLP is a wonderful parish, and I was truly blessed during my time there. In the providence of God, I was able to make many good friends during my time there. Please know that I greatly appreciate the warm welcome that I have received in the short time that I have been here.

Please be patient with me as I attempt to learn names, faces and the ministries that you have. I ask for your prayers as I begin my ministry here.

As most of you know, my sister Jan passed away on Saturday, January 25th at a hospital in Coon Rapids, MN. She was 76 years old, the second oldest of nine children in our family. Jan had a strong Christian faith; she was a faithful Lutheran for most of her life. Her funeral service will be on Friday, January 24th at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Park, MN. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for me and my family as we mourn her loss.

In April of 2021, we lost our sister Laurie to pancreatic cancer. Laurie was the youngest of the nine in our family. The loss of two sisters in just two years has been very sobering for me and my family. So, I think this is a reminder to me and to all of us…we need to stay close to Christ, His Church and to the sacraments. Lent is a wonderful time for prayer, fasting and almsgiving. May each of us take time in silence to pray and reflect and grow ever closer to our Lord.

All the best…in Christ, Father Wilson
