New Beginnings

02-12-2023Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B.Wilson, VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In case you missed my announcement at the Masses last weekend: The Bishop has asked and I have accepted a new assignment. On Mar 9, I will take on the position as rector of the cathedral parish in Charleston. (Some have asked what the title “rector” means. Traditionally, the priest in charge of a cathedral parish is called “rector” since the bishop is considered its proper “pastor.” It is also where we get the word “rectory” to designate a house where priests live.)

I realize that the Holy Land pilgrimage Feb 13-23, when I will be away, is not optimal timing. However, please know that I will try to spend time with as many as I can with the days I have remaining. Also, Charleston is not too far away, so I look forward to saying hello when you visit the Holy City!
Eleven and a half years has absolutely flown by! Together, we have done incredible things as a parish family. We also together have been through a lot. You are an incredibly special parish family. Know that I will truly miss you.

I am pleased to announce that you are getting a fantastic priest as your new pastor. On the same day, Mar 9, Fr. Richard Wilson will become pastor of St. Mary’s. Father Wilson is currently the pastor of Our Lady of Peace in North Augusta. As I mentioned at the Masses, it is a fun bit of irony you won’t have to learn a new name or change the name on the confessional! I know Fr. Wilson well, and he is a good, faithful priest who will love this parish family with his whole heart. Please pray for him and for me as we make this transition.

My final Sunday will be Mar 5. I will celebrate both the 11am and 1pm Masses that day. Then at 2:30pm we will have a reception in St. Angela Hall, where I will stay as long as necessary to speak to the amazing people of St. Mary’s. And amazing you are!

We all know as Catholic priests and faithful that, one day, this day arrives. Let us be joyful as we reflect on our long years together and what God has done through our faithful work in His name. This following little passage from St. Mark helped me. Jesus is in Capernaum, and, after a long time of ministry, He goes off to pray. The people find Him and say:

“ ‘Everyone is looking for you.’ Jesus told them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.’ So He went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.” (St. Mark 1:37-39)

As always, let us pray for each other! Father Wilson

Padre Wilson
