Pray for Holy Priestly Vocations

07-17-2022Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson, VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Upon looking at the bulletin this weekend, you will have immediately noticed our new and improved format. Cleaner lines and multicolored headings help to make it easier to find the information you need. The weekly calendar called “The Week Ahead” has returned, highlighting various activities and their locations. To make reading and finding information even easier, we have given English and Spanish language their own sections. Please be patient as any change is always challenging at first; but we hope you will like our new design.

If you are signed up on Flocknote, you will have received my message to beware of scammers, who are active yet again. They comb through our website and parish bulletin, sending messages and asking you to send “me” money, usually in the form of gift cards. Please remember that neither I nor any of our clergy will never ask this of you. If ever I need something, I will ask you directly and never through a text or email. Also, be assured that my email had not been hacked. They are not using my real email address. There is apparently nothing we can do about this except to pray for the sad people doing this.

What a blessing it has been to host our summer seminarian, Erik Roman. Thank you to all who gave Erik such a warm welcome to St. Mary’s. Erik has been busy at our parish on many fronts, concluding his time by ministering to the youth of our parish at summer camp. Erik returns to St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA (my own alma mater), to continue his studies for the sacred priesthood. Within a year, Erik is slated to be ordained as a transitional deacon, and then the afterwards as a priest of Jesus Christ. We at St. Mary’s have been richly blessed to host many, holy men like Erik, who are preparing to give their lives in service to you, the people of God in the Diocese of Charleston. Please continue to pray for Erik, for all our seminarians, and for more priests to serve you. As Jesus says, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.” Renew today your personal resolve to “ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for His harvest” (St. Matthew 9:37-38).

Last year, the Holy Father officially instituted the fourth Sunday of July to be the Church-wide celebration of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, coinciding near the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary and the grandparents, therefore, of Jesus. Next weekend (July 23 and 24), we will have a special blessing at Mass for all our grandparents and elderly, our “living treasuries” of faith. May we always honor them with a spirit of great respect and profound love. Let us pray for each other!

Padre Wilson
