God Mounts His Throne

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
What does heaven look like? “I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and language. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb” (Rev. 7:9). The month of May has been busy! In the past several weeks, both here at St. Mary’s and in our diocese with the ordination of our new bishop, we have had a magnificent glimpse of the biblical vision of heaven. What a blessing to experience such an incredible blend of languages, races, music, and peoples from all over the world who make up our one, universal Church.

We saw this glimpse of heaven in Aiken at our May Procession, May Crowning, and Parish Picnic, which was a joy-filled celebration. It took months of preparation, which included the setup, the Mass, the music, those who assisted with the Procession, the food, the entertainment, and, of course, the all-important clean up. How wonderful, as well, to see our special guests carrying flowers for our Blessed Mother – our First Communicants, who had received their First Holy Communion the day before. Then on May 10, several of our young men and women received the Holy Sacrament of Confirmation, equipping them with the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit, sacred weapons for spiritual ba􀀃le in our world. Allow me to offer an enormous Thank you! to each and every person who in any way made these celebrations possible. Your selfless giving helps make our parish truly great and is a reflection of Christ Himself.

This image of heaven that we have recently experienced is also the medicine we need for our broken world. The recent hate-filled shootings in Buffalo, NY, and Laguna Beach, CA, have the capacity to leave us feeling helpless. How do we fight racism and hate like we keep seeing? The antidote is you and me – true disciples of Jesus Christ – living our faith in action. One African-American pastor was asked, “What can we do?” His poignant response was, “Care.” We care. We must find ways to bridge these earthly divides to create, even now, a glimpse of heaven wherever we can. After all, we pray every day, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

Today, we celebrate the transferred Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. The Ascension is one of the most important beliefs of our divine faith that few people ever think about. The Ascension “completes” the Resurrection. Jesus Christ’s glorified, human body is now forever joined to the eternal, infinite Godhead. This is our destiny, too, when Christ “will raise these lowly bodies of ours to be like His own, glorified body” (Phil 3:21). We profess this privileged future in our Creed, when Christ will come again, raise the dead, and transform us to be like Himself, forever glorified. Next comes the promised Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit! Come! Father Wilson

¡Ven!
