Rivers of Blood and Tears

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“Rivers of blood and tears are flowing in Ukraine. It is not merely a military operation, but a war, which sows death, destruction and misery.” At his weekly Angelus on the First Sunday of Lent, Pope Francis delivered this impassioned plea: “Above all, I implore that the armed attacks cease and that negotiation – and common sense – prevail. And that international law be respected once again!” As average citizens we often feel helpless when it comes to the world stage. However, first of all we remind ourselves that prayer is powerful. We may not detect its effects in the time we want (which is always yesterday), but Our Lord teaches us that somehow, someway, our humble prayer is moving mountains. Pope Francis continued, “Let us pray together for Ukraine: ... Let us pray together, as brothers and sisters, to Our Lady, Queen of Ukraine. Hail Mary...”

If you want to do even more, you can give financial help by donating through Catholic Relief Services: crs.org . Almsgiving is one of the powerful means of spiritual growth at our disposal, especially during holy Lent. Also, we can let our elected representatives in Congress know our grief and sorrow at the plight of the Ukrainian people.

Switching gears as bit: Last Thursday, Mar 3, I had the privilege to meet our bishop-elect, Jacques Fabre, in person. I was impressed by his humility, sincerity, and his wonderful sense of humor. Let us pray for Bishop-elect Fabre as he makes this important transition to take on the burden of the office of Bishop. Two brief things: The bishop-elect’s last name is pronounced “FAH-br”, with the emphasis on the FAH (as in “fa-la-la-la-la” of Deck the Halls fame). The “br” is not “bray”, but simply pronounced as you see it: “br”.

Secondly, please note that due to scheduling conflicts, the date of Bishop-elect Fabre’s ordination has been moved and is now firmly set for Friday, May 13 at 2:00pm at the Charleston Area Convention Center, 5001 Coliseum Dr, North Charleston. This will allow accommodation for the very large crowd that plans to attend. Also, this is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, which is a nice touch.

Looking ahead: Lent has a couple of great solemnities hidden within, days in which we can – and should – relax our penances. Saturday, Mar 19, is the Solemnity of St. Joseph. We will have a special Mass with music at 8:00am. Also, Friday, Mar 25, is the Annunciation of the Lord, celebrating the Virgin Mary’s “yes” to God’s plan and Our Lord’s conception. The 5:30pm Mass that evening will also be elevated with special music for the solemnity.

Finally, don’t forget Stations of the Cross are held in Old St. Mary’s Fridays in English after the 5:30pm Mass, and at 7:00pm in Spanish.

Wishing you and yours a blessed and holy Lent!

Padre Wilson
