Parachuted into Lent

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“The Lord God then called to the man and asked him: ‘Where are you?’” (Genesis 3:9)

Several years ago, I read an excellent article about preparing for Lent. This great season is an ideal time to reassess where we truly are in our faith. It is a much-needed time when we allow God to ask us the same question He asked Adam, “Where are you?” The article mentioned that, not that long ago, the Church had three weeks of preparing for Lent. Our Eastern Catholic and Orthodox brothers and sisters still retain this time of preparation. Because of it, you could almost feel Lent on the horizon so that, when it finally arrived, you were prepared and could hit the ground running.

Unfortunately, in our day and with the hustle and bustle of our lives, Ash Wednesday can arrive without us realizing it. We then scramble to think of “something to do” or “give up,” but doing so without any real prayer or thought. It can leave us with the feeling that we have been “parachuted into Lent” like a soldier in an unexpected battle without any weapons with which to fight the spiritual battle raging around us. Don’t allow yourself to be caught off guard! Begin now thinking about what you will implement on March 2nd in order to grow your faith and turn away from sin. You will find Lent a much more fruitful experience if you prepare for its arrival. Masses on Ash Wednesday, March 2, will be: 7am, 8:20am, 12noon, 5:30pm, and 7pm (in Spanish).

I truly enjoyed our “Introduction to the Bible” presentation. Several people asked for a recommended reading list, which I’m happy to supply. There are too many titles to write, so I will give a few authors whom I recommend and a few titles.

Scott Hahn was a Presbyterian minister, who while studying the early Church, converted to the Catholic faith. He has written a large number of books, often with a little humor. Three of his titles include: Consuming the Word: The New Testament and The Eucharist in the Early Church, Evangelizing Catholics: A Mission Manual for the New Evangelization, Hail, Holy Queen: The Mother of God in the Word of God. He is also one of the major contributors to the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, which I highly recommend.

Brant Pitre is one of my favorite newer authors. He is also a convert and distinguished Scripture scholar. A few of his titles include: Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, and Jesus the Bridegroom: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told.

Finally, John Bergsma, another former minister, is also new favorite. Two of his works include: Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Bible Basics for Catholics.

Study the word so you come to know the Word.

Algunos de sus títulos incluyen en inglés son: Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, and Jesus the Bridegroom: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told.
