Called to Serve

10-10-2021Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For a few years now, one of our parishioners, Alejandro(Alex) Leguizamon, has been participating in our diocesandiaconate training program. A couple of weeks ago, hepassed one of the milestones in his training and was officiallyinstalled as an Acolyte in the Church. Soon, you will beseeing Alex at various Masses, mostly acting as lector andhelping in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass.Acolytes are sort of the “top-level” of extraordinaryministers, being the only extraordinary ones officiallyinstalled for the universal Church. (All other EM’s are onlycommissioned in individual parishes.)

Alex was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and is fullybilingual. He has been married to his lovely wife, Joely, forthirty-three years. They have spent the last nine years withus at St. Mary’s and are the proud parents of five childrenand three grandchildren. Alex and Joely together coordinateour extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. You mayhave seen Alex around since he is a wonderful member ofour St. Mary’s staff. Joely is the administrator of the OurLady of the Valley Catholic Center next to Our Lady of theValley parish in Gloverville. God-willing, Alex will beordained as a Deacon in about a year and a half. Please prayfor Alex as he completes his formation and prepares himselffor a lifetime of service to the Church in general, and for youand me in particular.

Mark your calendars for a brilliant upcoming concert: OnTuesday, November 2, All Souls Day, at 7:00pm in the church, the Columbia Choral Society together with the Aiken CivicOrchestra will perform one of my all-time favorites: thespectacular and at times hauntingly beautiful Requiem byGabriel Fauré. Fauré composed the work between 1887 and1890, basing it on the texts of the Catholic Requiem Mass. InFauré’s own words, the work “is dominated from beginningto end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”Tickets are $20 (all students are free) and available at theparish office and at the door on the night of theperformance. (We will still have our normal 5:30pm Massthat day.) Don’t miss this incredible concert!

Everyone needs to eat, so come this Sunday from 12 Noon to3:00pm to St. Angela Hall for some fantastic and authenticMexican food. This is our monthly Mexican Food Bazaar(Kermes). Enjoy favorite Mexican dishes such as tacos, tamales, tostadas, sopes, salads, fruits, desserts, and more.Proceeds support our parish. You can eat in or get your foodto-go.

Joely es la administradora del Centro Católico OurLady of the Valley junto a la parroquia Our Lady of the Valleyen Gloverville.
