See You In September

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Monday, I depart for the 30-day Ignatian retreat that I have been writing about. Due to the nature of the retreat — silent and intense — I will not be taking calls or answering email or texts for the duration of the retreat – August 2 through September 3. But I will not leave you orphans! You will be in the very capable hands of Fr. Francisco graciously assisted by Msgr. Willie. I am thankful to them since without them I would not be able to do this retreat. I am also extremely grateful to you, dear parishioners, because it is your generosity and support also that allows me to be away.

Whenever I am away, I try to offer my first Mass for you and your intentions. I plan to do this as normal and additionally to offer Mass for you and your intentions on August 10, the Feast of St. Lawrence, which also marks exactly ten years for me as pastor of St. Mary’s. I have a lot to be thankful for having been your pastor for a decade now. My heart is truly filled with gratitude! You are an amazing parish. Please pray for me as I pray for you!

Speaking of thankfulness, recently Pope Francis has been turning our attention to the gratitude we should have for our grandparents and all people of, if you will, “grandparent age.” Last Monday, July 26 was the Feast of Sts. Joachim and Ann, the parents of the Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. Our parish is leading a pilgrimage to Saint Ann’s church in Charlotte on Saturday, August 7. It’s not too late to join up! The pilgrimage will leave at 8:30am and will include a tour of their beautiful church, a short talk, and lunch. Those attending will either drive or carpool. You may be interested to know that we should finally begin work replacing the roof on Old St. Mary’s church. Those who have done any building or repair probably will not be surprised that it has taken much longer than anticipated to finalize contracts and schedules and such. We are finally at a place where we can begin replacing our 116 year old roof. As I’ve said before, we’ve certainly gotten our money’s worth! They still make the same roof style, so it should not change the beautiful appearance of our historic church. Once construction is finished, we will move daily Masses back into Old St. Mary’s. The Tuesday 6:30am Mass will remain since we are told that it will not impact the project at that time of day.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

El lunes salgo para el retiro ignaciano de 30 días sobre el que he estado escribiendo. Debido a la naturaleza del retiro, de silencio e intenso, no recibiré llamadas ni contestaré correos electrónicos o mensajes de texto durante el retiro, del 2 de agosto al 3 de septiembre. ¡Pero no los dejaré huérfanos! Estarán en las muy capaces manos del P. Francisco amablemente asistido por Mons. Willie. Les estoy agradecido ya que sin ellos no podría hacer este retiro. También estoy muy agradecido con ustedes, queridos feligreses, porque es su generosidad y apoyo lo que también me permite estar ausente.

Siempre que estoy fuera, trato de ofrecer mi primera misa por ustedes y sus intenciones. Planeo hacer esto como de costumbre y además ofreceré misa por usted y sus intenciones el 10 de agosto, fiesta de San Lorenzo, que también marca exactamente diez años desde que soy párroco de Santa María. Tengo mucho que agradecer por haber sido su pastor durante una década. ¡Mi corazón está verdaderamente lleno de gratitud! Son una parroquia asombrosa. ¡Oren por mí como yo oro por ustedes!

Hablando de agradecimiento, recientemente el Papa Francisco ha estado centrando nuestra atención en la gratitud que deberíamos tener por nuestros abuelos y todas las personas de, por así decirlo, la "edad de los abuelos". El pasado lunes 26 de julio fue la Fiesta de los Santos Joaquín y Ana, los padres de la Virgen María y los abuelos de Jesús. Nuestra parroquia está programando una peregrinación a la iglesia de Santa Ana en Charlotte el sábado 7 de agosto. ¡No es demasiado tarde para unirse! La peregrinación saldrá a las 8:30 am e incluirá un recorrido por su hermosa iglesia, una breve charla y almuerzo. Los asistentes conducirán o compartirán el automóvil. Quizás le interese saber que finalmente iniciaremos el trabajo para reemplazar el techo de la iglesia de Old St. Mary. Aquellos que hayan realizado alguna construcción o reparación probablemente no se sorprenderán de que haya tardado mucho más de lo previsto el finalizar los contratos, los cronogramas y demás. Finalmente estamos listos para comenzar a reemplazar nuestro techo de 116 años. Como he dicho antes, ¡ciertamente le hemos sacado el valor a nuestro dinero! Tendremos el mismo estilo de techo, por lo que no debería cambiar la hermosa apariencia de nuestra iglesia histórica. Una vez finalizada la construcción, trasladaremos las misas diarias a Old St. Mary. La misa del martes a las 6:30 am no cambiará ya que se nos dice que no afectará el proyecto a esa hora del día.

Finalmente, el padre Francisco se hará cargo de mi columna semanal mientras yo no esté. ¡Gracias Padre!
