Keeping Faith

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I have been rather amazed at the blatant irresponsibility of various news sources reporting on just one of many recent deliberations of our U.S. Catholic Bishops. The Conference voted to draft a teaching document with help from the Vatican on the centrality of the Eucharist in the life of all the Catholic faithful. It is indeed sad that some have chosen to read things through a political lens, and not through the eyes of faith. We absolutely must be a people driven by the Holy Spirit, and not by rumors, speculation, or our own agendas. If one is searching for a fight, he or she will always find it.

Below are some excerpts from a recent interview by Our Sunday Visitor with Bishop Kevin Rhoades, chair of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, which explains things well:

“There is a great need for a Eucharistic revival in the Church, a deeper understanding of the Eucharistic mystery and its centrality in our life. … We are called to live what we receive, to live in a way that is consistent with the selfgiving love of Jesus that is made present in the Eucharistic sacrifice. This is related to our call to be missionary disciples. In our current time and culture, there is a temptation to privatize our faith or to separate our celebration and reception of holy Communion from our responsibility to live in communion with the Church and to live lives that are consistent with the deep meaning of the Eucharist, the sacrament of charity.

“This document will be addressed to all Catholics. All of us are called to continual conversion and to Eucharistic consistency.

“We are striving to write a document that will contribute to a real Eucharistic revival in the Church in our nation by highlighting the truth about the amazing gift Jesus gave us on the night before he died, the importance of beauty and reverence in our celebration of this great mystery, and the wonderful graces we receive in the Eucharist to grow in our Christian lives. Though there are some disagreements among us bishops, I pray that … we will be united as shepherds and teachers and help our people to grow as faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus.” (Interview by Gretchen R. Crowe, June 21, 2021)

Elsewhere, the bishop said that the document originated out of concern among the bishops over the “proven decline in belief in the Real Presence among our Catholic faithful.” He also added that the document “was never considered … to be a statement about any one individual or about any one category of sinful behavior, rather it would bring heightened awareness among the faithful of the need to be to conformed to the Eucharist and to bear public witness to the faith through a call to conversion.” Keep the Faith and live it as a true disciple.
