Changes to Virus-Related Restrictions at St. Mary’s

04-01-2021NewsRev. Gregory B. Wilson, VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As more of our fellow parishioners become vaccinated and are starting to return to Mass, the Bishop has altered previous restrictions. Your safety is my utmost priority. At the same time, we are making it possible for people to safely attend the various liturgies of the Church in order to receive the life-giving Sacraments, most especially the sacred Body and Blood of Our Lord in the Holy Mass.

Here is a quick summary of the changes:

What hasn’t changed:

  1. Please continue to wear a mask or other face-covering while inside the body of the church. It should cover both your nose and mouth at the same time.
  2. The two sections of pews immediately in front of the altar will stay the same. If you choose to sit here, please keep 6-feet of distance between household units.
  3. The Bishop has not restored the communal Sign of Peace.
  4. We still will have no chalices for the people at Holy Communion.
  5. Although the Bishop prefers people receive Holy Communion in the hand, he has not forbidden Communion on the tongue. Those receiving on the tongue, please wait, come to a priest or deacon, and go last.
  6. In all cases, kindness and patience with our fellow Christian brothers and sisters should be our norm.

Some changes to note:

  1. In the back section and far side sections of pews, the ribbons will be removed after 7am Mass on Easter Sunday and will remain that way. Please be responsible and use the current CDC and WHO guides for schools of 3-feet apart (about a generous arm’s length) between household units if choosing to sit in these pews.
  2. Those who wish to have the security of complete social distancing, please plan to attend either the 5pm Saturday Mass or the 11am Sunday Mass and go to Mother Teresa Hall, where we will keep strict 6-feet of distancing between household units. Mass will be livestreamed and Holy Communion will be brought to you. (We will not stream any other Masses, so please plan accordingly.)
  3. Ushers will again take up a collection at the Offertory by using long-handled baskets. The gifts of bread and wine will be brought down as they once were.
  4. Holy water returns at Easter! The “CDC is not aware of any scientific reports of the virus that causes COVID-19 spreading to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, water playgrounds, or other treated aquatic venues.” (report released February 21, 2021) Of course, it is not necessary to exercise this devotion, so simply omit using it if you are uncomfortable.

We are blessed in that we are not a typical enclosed space. Our ceiling is forty-six feet high with good ventilation. Still, please do all you can to stay safe and respect your fellow parishioners.

I would like to thank each of you for your biblical-sized level of patience while we all get through this together as a parish family. Coming out of this will seem slow, even like baby steps. But keep in mind, once babies start walking, they soon start to run!

As always, let us resolve to pray for each other that we may grow in holiness. This is our common goal. Through the prayers of Holy Mary, Help of Christians, may you grow ever closer to Her Son.
