Transfigured in Faith

02-28-2021Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson

Often, we have questions about our Catholic faith. Even lifelong Catholics sometimes have unanswered questions about things like God’s existence, why bother going to Confession and Mass, why we believe that a Consecrated Host is actually Jesus, and more that we know maybe a little bit about or have heard about from other people, but we can’t quite make sense of it all. This creates a kind of “spiritual dissonance” within us. Rather than look up the answers with good, Catholic resources, we often let the questions fester and go about our lives, perhaps afraid of the answers. Understanding more about the existence of God and the divine origins of the Church might have serious implications for how we are living our lives. While ignorance may be “bliss,” as the saying goes, it won’t get you to heaven or give you true peace here in this life.

Now is the time to rouse yourself and seek Truth. FORMED is a free resource available for our parish that has countless videos, talks, books, movies, children’s movies, and much more on every aspect of our faith, available in both English and Spanish. Go to the parish website (www.stmarysaiken.org), click on “FORMATION,” and then click on the fifth item under “Adult Faith Formation” - Formed.org. Put in ZIP code 29801, and St. Mary’s will pop up. Click “Next,” and go from there! God has given us both Faith and Reason. Our intellect allows us to delve into the very mind of God. Exploring answers to our questions will help build up our faith.

I hope you will join me in supporting the Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA). The BAA gives each of us at St. Mary’s the opportunity to reach beyond our parish borders and join fellow Catholics in our diocese to do immense good by funding critical programs like Catholic Charities, larger-scale youth and young adult ministry, college campus ministry, seminary vocations, Catholic school grants, and much more. Our parish target this year is $108.958, which I know we can easily reach. To give, simply go to the parish website (www.stmarys-aiken.org) and click on the BAA banner; or you can check your mail/email for a note from the Bishop about the BAA; or just pick up a brochure and giving envelope in the church or parish office. Thank you for helping support this important endeavor, uniting ourselves with our Bishop to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ.

Please note that due to an electrical problem in Old St. Mary’s, Perpetual Adoration is again in St. Claire Chapel. Please remember to wear your mask and keep socially distant. Finally, for Lent we are adding the Angelus and the Divine Mercy chaplet after our daily Masses: Mon, Tue, & Thu after the 5:30pm Mass, and Wed after the 8:20am Mass. Stations of the Cross are held Fridays after the 5:30pm Mass, and 7pm in Spanish.
