Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
For us as Catholics in the United States, the month of November is our celebration of National Black Catholic History Month. As disciples of Jesus Christ, it is always incredibly important for us to support actively all our brothers and sisters in the faith. We recall that especially here in the South, some lived during the times of Jim Crow laws. Healing takes not only time but also our presence, action, and love.
I’ll have more to write next week, but in the meantime, mark your calendars and come join us for Sankofa Catholic Ministry meeting on November 27 at 6:30pm in Deacon Waters Conference Room (St. Michael Hall building).
Thanksgiving Day is next week, Nov 22. Note that we will have a special Mass for Thanksgiving Day at 9:00am. (There will be no 5:30pm Mass or confessions that day.)
Finally, as our nation celebrates Veteran’s Day today (Nov 11), we recall the contributions of those who serve to keep us safe and free. I’ve included a prayer for those who serve in the armed forces. Pray for them with a thankful heart!
Father Wilson
God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm’s way. Shield them, we ask you, from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! Amen.
