Dear friends,

I want to take this opportunity to say, “thank you” for your warmest welcome. I am truly blessed to be part of the St. Mary’s family. I also want to thank you for all your prayers and especially for praying for me while I was sick with COVID-19. Your prayers worked!

It all started in Mexico while visiting family in the middle of July. I wasn't able to breathe and it just got worse after that. I really thought I was not going to make it, but God had other plans for me. Let us pray for all of those who are struggling with this horrible virus that they may not lose hope and that God may heal them. Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons God has given us. Remember, Jesus Himself would often slip away to pray.

This week we celebrate the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, also known as “The Triumph of the Cross.” According to tradition, early in the fourth century, St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem to excavate the Holy Sepulcher and discovered the True Cross. Holy Cross day is a day which honors and commemorates the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the cross for our salvation.

So, how can we celebrate Holy Cross Day? I invite you to celebrate by reflecting on the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for all of us. Meditate on why we, as Christians, continue to look to the cross. Christ himself gives us the answer in the gospel of Luke 9:23, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

The Holy Cross Prayer

Oh Lord Almighty! You have suffered death at the cross for our sins.

Oh Holy Cross of Jesus! be my true light and fill my soul with good thoughts.

Oh Holy Cross! help me in my salvation and safeguard me against unholy thoughts and worldly dangers.

Oh Holy Cross of Jesus! be my hope so that I may worship the Holy Cross of Jesus of Nazareth crucified.

Have pity on me. Oh Holy Cross have mercy on me forever and ever. In honor of the Precious Blood of Jesus and His fearful Death and Resurrection and His Glorification which leads to everlasting life. As true as Jesus is born on Christmas and crucified on Good Friday. As true as St. Joseph and Nicodemus took Jesus down from the cross. As true as Jesus ascended into heaven. May He preserve me from my enemies both visible and invisible forever and ever. Lord Almighty, into Your hands I give my soul and my body. Oh, Lord Jesus! grant me the strength to bear the cross as Yourself. Teach me to bear it with great humility that the Blessed Virgin may fill me with the Holy Spirit. Preserve my soul and lead it to life everlasting. Amen.

Blessings and peace,

Father Francisco

Queridos amigos,

Amen.

Paz y bendiciones,

Padre Francisco
